For the 1962 World's Fair, a 74-acre campus was developed in the heart of Seattle, bringing together new and existing buildings. By the end of the Fair's seven-month run nearly 10 million people from around the world had visited Seattle and the 1962 World's Fair. The Fair's theme invited space-age innovation. And Seattle Center became a laboratory of new design and exhibits such as the Boeing Spacearium, offering a realistic journey through outer space, complete with countdown, blast off to the stars and planets and a safe return to earth.
Further architectural marvels included the sea urchin design of the International Fountain, and the crystalline purity of the Science Pavilion, featuring graceful arches, reflective pools and beautiful interlocking structures. Uncommon modes of transportation became an art form at Seattle Center with the Monorail and the "Bubbleator," a glass-enclosed, 150-passenger elevator that rose through the interior of the Washington State Coliseum (now KeyArena).
Today's Seattle Center grounds are home to several large seasonal events like the Northwest Folk Life Festival, Bumbershoot and The Bite of Seattle.
Also on the grounds, are the Pacific Science Center, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Boeing IMAX Theatre, Seattle Repetory Theatre, Intiman Theatre, Children's Museum, Seattle Children's Theatre, whew! and more!
